The Doctor is the last survivor of an ancient race known as the Timelords. Timelords a race of beings who mastered time travel, and set themselves up as soul watchers over the universe the resided in. They were a stagnate, politically driven race of bearcats who harbored an arrogance that set themselves apart from the younger races around them. They are a mysterious powerful race, with two hearts and the ability to “regenerate” their bodies into different forms when they die or are badly injured. They have 12 bodies. The Doctor is on his tenth.

At a young age, the Doctor left his home world, his family (taking only his grand daughter Susan) a renegade, and a criminal because he insisted on involving himself in the affairs of the younger races and treat them as equals. The Doctor was disgusted by the Timelords insistence of using their powers over time just to watch other people suffer. Over the years as his granddaughter grew, he grew quite attached to the human race, raising Susan to be human. It wasn’t before long, he and Susan were discovered by two human teachers (Ian and Barbra) and forced to leave, kidnapping the teachers in the process. The small group becomes friends, though the Doctor’s cranky eccentric behavior often caused difficulties between him and Ian.

Over the years, companions came and go. Susan married a human, Ian and Barbra eventually returned home, though it was a long difficult process because the TARDIS, the Doctor’s time machine never really worked, and often took them to other places than what they planned.

The Doctor’s first life was taken while fighting a cybernetic race. His regeneration was strained, and he became a younger man, a hobo-childlike fellow with a sense of meddling and play.

The Doctor was running as well, and it took his people quite some time before they caught up with him, arrested him, and tried him. They made him serve as an agent for the Celestial Intervention Agency (Season6b) before forcing him to regenerate.

The timelords exiled his third life on earth where he worked for an organization called UNIT while trying to repair his broken TARDIS (the Timelords removed certain vital components). Eventually by his fourth regeneration, the Doctor succeeded in repairing his ship, and left with Sarah Jane Smith, his friend and companion at that time.

Sarah and him spent a great deal of time and had several adventures together. They only separated after the Doctor was recalled to his home world, and Sarah was left standing on the street, she insisted on leaving him after a quarrel.

After returning home, the Doctor is able to regain his freedom officially after saving the Presidency, and assisting the Council of Timelords. He has several different travels and friends after that. Until his 8th regeneration, where his people the Timelords get involved in a race of time traveling creatures known as the Daleks.

Daleks were genetically engineered “tanks”, the last remaining remnants of the Kalad race, created by an insane genius named Davros. Over the years they’ve encountered the Doctor, evolved over the time, until eventually despite their set backs at the Doctor’s hands become a time traveling race capable of threatening the Doctor’s own people.

The time war devastates the universe, destroying the higher races, and wiping out the Doctor’s people as well as the Daleks. Ironically it is the Doctor who “Destroyed both sides”. His 9th regeneration walked with the guilt of a man who destroyed his people, sacrificing them in order to wipe out a race that would destroy every living race they encountered.

The Doctor’s history is basically the same as the new series, up until Last of the Time Lords. History takes a different root. Sarah Jane and Martha’s parents are killed rather than taken into prison, and Jack’s team are also killed. The Doctor blames himself. After time has been set back to normal. The Doctor is still determined to save the Master, hoping to bring out the pat of him that is Yano. Instead, the Master tries to kill the Doctor and Martha takes the blow, dying in the Doctor’s arms and leaving him in shock and knowing she save the world and loved him yet he never did anything to let her know she was more than second best. The Master is killed by Jack Harkness.

Distraught he was responsible for Martha’s death the Doctor leaves Earth, vowing not to take another companion again. The TARDIS being badly damaged is drawn into the rift, and forced to land in Torchwood… Where he is stranded until his TARDIS is repaired. It needs to be near the rift so it can heal is organic circuits.
